Kessler CanyonTech entrepreneur Peter Kight has paid $28 million for the roughly 15,000-acre Kessler Canyon ranch in Colorado, according to the seller, former Days Inn Hotels CEO Richard C. Kessler.

The Garfield County ranch first went on the market in 2014 for $35 million with Michael S. Hall and Brian Smith of Hall and Hall, then saw its price drop to $32.5 million. [read more]

Kessler CanyonFormer Days Inn Hotels CEO Richard Kessler has sold his exquisite ranch resort west of Glenwood Springs to CheckFree founder Peter Kight. Numerous structures built to exacting standards exist on the property, including the 20,000-square-foot Homestead Lodge. According to The Wall Street Journal, the 15,000-acre ranch, which was originally listed for $35 million in 2014, changed hands for $28 million. The auction of Thomas Land Co., a 28,645-acre operation that overlooked Lake McConaughy, attracted international interest but drew a mostly regional crowd of 300 people to the Keith County Fairgrounds.

The 28,645-acre farm includes 26,739 deeded acres and 1,906 leased acres of Nebraska state farm and ranchland with 11,705 acres in dryland crops, 13,293 acres in ranchland, and 3,647 acres in irrigated farmland. Miller Lake RanchJason Spaeth broke the first commandment of ranch buying when he came across a 7,000-acre cattle ranch with miles of flowing streams and deer habitat in western Wyoming.

"The number one rule is don't get emotional, but I did," says the retired financial services executive, who paid about $10.5M for the property in June. "I really fell in love with the place."

Spaeth, who lives in Minneapolis, plans to operate the property as a cattle ranch and spend summers there with his wife and three sons. But he realizes it will be difficult to make money in the cow business. [read more]

MC Land and CattleAn Oklahoma farm family purchased the 7,722-acre MC Land and Cattle Ranch near Meeteetse, Wyo. The asking price was $8.7 million, or $1,127 per deeded acre (the selling price wasn’t disclosed). Included were 2,594 State of Wyoming lease acres and 506 Bureau of Land Management lease acres. The annual cost for the state lease is about $3,640, while real estate taxes run about $9,100 per year.  [read more
