The Parker Ranch is a sandhill ranch that does not have wet meadows and instead utilities a range and cake operation. The current owner trucks most of the cows off the ranch after weaning to corn stalks in the numerous irrigated farms in the Platte Valley south of I-80. The cows stay on the pivots until calving then trucked back to the ranch where the cows are fed high protein cake through calving then turned out on grass. An alternative is to keep all the cows on the ranch, range and cake through the winter then back on grass.
Cost of operating is a huge factor on this ranch. Very little machinery is needed and only a small amount of hay is purchased each year. Utilizing a controlled grazing operation the ranch rotates the cows through the ranch.
Each pasture has at least two livestock water locations provided by over 70 miles of underground pipeline and 55 windmills for a total of over 125 water tanks over 34 different pastures. Fences are all four wire and as perfect as fences can be.
Under the current owner, the ranch is running around 1,500 cows. Utilizing a range and cake system, rotating the grazing and keeping the cows on the ranch year-round the ranch is estimated to carry 1,200 to 1,300 head, all depending on management and weather conditions. First calf heifers are kept on the ranch through winter and do not go to corn stalks.
The Parker Ranch is an all grass ranch with no hay production. Owned by the same owner for over 25 years this efficient ranch operates as a very conservative range and cake cow/calf ranch that is ready for the next owner. The ranch has been under excellent management for several years using pasture rotation. The grass on the ranch will prove the results of that.
