Anderson Camps Ranch, now a 165-acre family compound, has been in the same hands for the past 45 years
The property, which was homesteaded in the 1800s, has a very colorful and varied history. In the early 1920s, Mary Converse, who was a member of the family that founded the namesake sneaker company, built the main house as a wedding present for her daughter and son-in-law.
Even before the summer camp was established, the house had made a name for itself. It was the first in the area to get electricity, had one of the first indoor plumbing systems and was the first to get a phone line installed.
A hub for the community, it, at various points, served as a polling place and a meeting space before three ex-World War II Women’s Army Corps members bought it and transformed it into the Lucky GJ Ranch, where city dwellers came hang out and square dance, fly fish, horseback ride and hunt.
