Atarque Ranch in western New Mexico sells to mystery buyer

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The 110,000-acre Atarque Ranch has been under the Yates family’s ownership for 47 years. According to Hall and Hall, the agency representing the seller, the Yates decided to sell due to a shift in family dynamics, and it was not financially motivated.

“They’re financially secure and money isn’t the motivation to sell the ranch,” Hall and Hall Partner Jeff Buerger said. “I think with family dynamics and how people choose to dispose of legacy assets. The decision was made after a long period of time that this is a ranch that they wanted to part with. They have other holdings, and they wanted to consolidate operations.”

The group that bought the ranch is based back east, but has a few ranches in New Mexico. Buerger says it’s important to them to keep the ranch similar to how it was operated before.

The ranch is filled with Native American tradition, with caves, dwellings, and pottery shards scattered throughout the property. Buerger says the new buyer will leave that untouched.
