Overview

Executive Summary

A quintessential Southwestern setting with river frontage, exceptional views, abundant wildlife and refined authentic improvements set Abiquiu Valley Farm aside as one of New Mexico’s most distinctive offerings. This 228± deeded acre holding is an enclave of verdant meadows and towering cottonwood trees along the Rio Chama’s “Bosque” or riparian corridor. Located just minutes from the community of Abiquiu, this lush river-bottom farm is surrounded by grey bluffs and red sandstone cliffs rising against the blue New Mexico sky.

Discerning buyers will not only appreciate the beauty of Abiquiu Valley Farm, but also the diverse recreational and agricultural opportunities it possesses. The farm provides quality elk hunting and is home to a healthy herd of elk that swells in size during the fall. Enrolled in New Mexico’s EPLUS system and located within the Secondary Management Zone for New Mexico Game Unit 51A, elk hunting licenses for the property are available on an unlimited and over-the-counter basis. One can also enjoy angling for trout on over a mile of the property’s Chama River frontage and a private pond. The equestrian will love the farm’s horse barn and equine amenities which include a dressage arena. Private internal trails are well-suited for horseback rides, walks, cycling or side-by-side cruises. The Carson National Forest sits a few hundred yards away and is easily accessed from the property by foot or horseback. As the only Demeter-certified organic farm in New Mexico, Abiquiu Valley Farm has historically produced high-quality alfalfa, medicinal herbs and other crops on nearly 70± irrigated meadows.

The farm’s improvements are exceptional and befitting of such a scenic landscape and locale. Anchoring the owner’s compound is the 7,294± square feet main residence designed by celebrated architect and designer, Theodore Waddell. This Spanish adobe-style house wraps around a traditional central courtyard/atrium and features a library, chef’s kitchen, master suite, offices, two ensuite guest rooms, vaulted ceilings and fireplaces in nearly every room. The nearby 4,685± square feet guest residence is an authentic southwestern adobe house with three bedrooms, five bathrooms, kitchen and living area, and a screened porch overlooking the property. A courtyard separates the guest house from two individual ensuite casitas. A 5,373± square feet lodge built in the cathedral-adobe style complements the houses. The lodge has two apartments and is well-suited for a multitude of uses including theater and concerts. Rounding out the primary improvements are an equipment barn and 10-stall horse barn with turnouts, waterers, tack room, doctoring area and laundry.

Locale

Abiquiu, New Mexico is a place where grey bluffs, dramatic outcrops and red sandstone cliffs rise above verdant fields and the “bosque” or cottonwood forest lining the Chama River. Steeped in natural beauty, it is a place with a rich blend of colors, the arts, history, culture and agriculture that draws visitors from around the globe. Long before it became a famed travel destination and mecca for the arts, the Abiquiu area was home to rich Indigenous cultures. The descendants of these cultures and people continue to influence the history, land and arts of the area.

Nearly directly across the river from Abiquiu Valley Farm is Georgia O’Keeffe’s house and studio which is managed by the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. To the north and behind the ranch is Cerro Pedernal, a 9,866-foot flat-topped peak and scenic New Mexico landmark. The Pedernal is of cultural significance to the area’s Indigenous communities and was a favorite subject of O’Keeffe’s. The Abiquiu area is also home to a handful of excellent cafes and restaurants, attractive inns, art galleries and boutique shops. Abiquiu Lake and O’Keeffe’s Ghost Ranch are both located a short distance from the farm and community of Abiquiu. Also, within easy striking distance of the farm is the highly-regarded Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort.
