History

Fort Laramie is best known for the years from 1849 to 1890, when it served as a military post in the western Indian Wars. Earlier fur-trade, robe-trade and emigrant-supply forts that existed on the same site from 1834 to 1849 are less known and understood.

Recreational Amenities

Recreational Considerations

Ft. Laramie National Historic Site:

Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories.

General Operations

General Operations

Tract 1's 292 acre Fort Laramie Bed and Breakfast is an established business with great online reviews. It includes a bunk house, officer’s quarters/saloon, restroom facilities, and a 3 bedroom/2.5 bath home with over-sized detached garage. The Grayrocks Reservoir, the North Platte and Laramie rivers and the fort, a regional tourist attraction operated by the National Park Service, are only minutes away. According to the website, "guests can choose to stay in a traditional tepee, a refurbished covered wagon from the early 1900s, enjoy more modern comforts with a nod to rustic charm in our log-cabin style room." Not surprisingly, many of the guests are interested in the Oregon Trail. The fort, which was established to supply and protect immigrant travelers, has no place for visitors to spend the night. Guests often stay a night or two at the B&B while traveling the Oregon Trail.
