Boone Pickens Jr. publicly announced he was seeking a buyer for his prized Texas ranch, a vast swath of land encompassing nearly 100 square miles that he began accumulating in the late 1970s. As the oil magnate and businessman, who turns 90 in May, considers his legacy, he has expressed interest in passing on the property to a person or entity whose conservation ethic aligns with his own.

A Northern California ranch owned by the descendants of the late Dean Witter, founder of the eponymous investment bank, is asking $31 million. Called Lone Pine Ranch, the roughly 27,000-acre property spans Trinity and Mendocino counties, about a six-hour drive from San Francisco.
