Upland game birds habitat and population numbers have certainly been affected by drought, winter storms, and manmade habitat loss but there’s good news for hunters and we found a few sources to help you figure out where your best hunting options may be this year.
Of note, the Bobwhite quail season in South Texas is off to a good start with a flush of nesting habitat thanks to late spring rainfall however numbers were still low throughout much of the rest of the region despite these habitat conditions. Ruffed grouse surveys in Wisconsin were down but with favorable nesting conditions the field reports are showing promise for a good season and pheasant trends are holding strong in South Dakota and northwest Iowa.
